History of Santo Domingo Church

Santo Domingo ChurchThe church was built in 1512 and was part of the Monastery of the Holy Cross. The initial design was Gothic, as it can be seen in the arches and vaults. It was completed afterwards during Renaissance, Baroque and Modern Eras by several artists. This makes the Santo Domingo Church one of the most peculiar religious buildings in Granada.
In the outside of the building, the façade includes stone portico with three pointed arches on top of columns with the initials of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabel “F” and “Y”.

After the columns there are paintings that depict the Virgin of the Rosary, to whom the church is dedicated and Co-Patroness of the city of Granada. In one of the sides the shield of the kings and in the other side the shield with Charles the emperor.

The interior of the church has a Latin cross floor plan with only one wide nave and five small chapels on each side. In the centre of the vast presbytery there is a remarkable tabernacle made of marble from the year 1699. In one side there is an altarpiece that depicts the Virgin of the Rosary and a number of angels and cherubim’s that seem to be playing. The author of this altarpiece is Blas Antonio Moreno.
